Format:

Unlike conventional racing, rallies are held primarily on forest access roads. Conditions on these roads can dictate speeds from well over 200 km/h to as low as 30 km/h. Also, unlike racing, the route remains unknown to the driver until it is read at speed by the co-driver (navigator). At every moment, the car, driver and co-driver must be ready for whatever may be around the next curve!

The Performance Rally format consists of two parts: Special Stages and Transit Sections. Special Stages are run flat-out against the clock and are closed to public traffic. Transit Sections are the routes between Stages, in which teams must obey all traffic laws. Plenty of time is given to allow teams to arrive at the start of the next Special Stage without speeding, and penalties are assessed for arriving too early or too late. The accumulation of times from the Special Stages and any Transit Section penalties make up the final scores and help to determine the winner.

Selected entries (driver/navigator):

  • 1999 BC Navigational Rally Drivers' Champion and BC Rally Director Paul Westwick and Andrew Dobric of Vancouver in a 1988 Toyota Celica AllTrac.
  • Winners of this year's Calgary Winter Rally and 1st runners up from the Big Horn and Rocky Mountain Rallies, rising stars Janusz Komorowski and Tomasz Karzynski of Calgary in a 1988 Mazda 323 GTX.
  • 1986 CanaMex Rally winner and top ten finisher at the 1998 Panama-Alaska Rally, Bob Trinder and Andy White of Vancouver in a 1988 Toyota Celica AllTrac.
  • National level competitor and experienced rallyist Peter Hill and Barry Gurnsey of Calgary in a very nicely prepared 1973 Toyota Corolla. Peter actually finished 3rd overall as a navigator at the 1982 Mountain Trials Rally, back when this event was on the National calendar.
  • 2000 Thunderbird Rally class winners Martin Wilson and Bill Westhead of Vancouver in a very special, ex-Canadian National Championship winning 1980 Toyota Corolla once driven by 5-time Canadian Rally Champion Taisto Heinonen of 100 Mile House, BC
Additional news interest:
  • The addition of the Mountain Trials Rally to the Western Canadian Performance Rally Championship has grown the calendar to a total of seven events between Alberta and BC. You can bet that competitors from both sides of the Rockies will be in a heated battle for valuable series points at the Mountain Trials Rally.
  • The Mountain Trials Rally holds a special place in BC motorsports history and has been held off and on since 1960. During the 1970's and 80's the rally became famous as part of the Canadian National Rally Championship. Revived once again for 2000, the Mountain Trials Rally will feature challenging mountain roads in BC's central interior to test the abilities of the rally teams and their vehicles.
